Subject: Great Project`
I am currently writing a unit to be placed on the web for Kindergarten
through Grade Five students in the United States. Your activity
is wonderfully exciting! How do we participate?
Our zoos encourage people to adapt an animal. Really they just
donate money to help support the animal.
I teach in a poverty area. My students are ofter too familiar
with drugs and violence. I do every thing possible to instill
a love of life for all humanity. This is perfect!
Thanks for any help you are able to provide,
ChrisKelly

Date: 16th May, 2001Dear
Chris,
The way the project works is that I send one of my very special
penguins to you and all you have to do is record the life of
the penguin whilst he/she is with you and document any work
they are involved in. Documentation is in the form of e-mails
back to me and photographs showing the penguin 'at work'. Really,
what you do with my penguin is up to you. All I ask is that
you keep me updated from time to time. All the correspondence
will be published on the website along with the images so that
other people can see what you and the penguin are doing.
If you are still interested, let me know and I will get one
of my penguins to pack their suitcase ready for the journey.
The only problem at the moment is that I am currently travelling
around Australia and then on to New Zealand (work as well as
play!) so it might take some time for me to get a penguin packed
- might be next week or it might be next month. If you think
you can possibly wait that long then I would love to have you
'on board'.
I hope to hear from you later
All the best
Guy

It sounds too fantastic. Your journeys sound facinating. We
would love to participate. You are amazing for devoting the
time and energy to this project. We as so thankful that you
have allowed us to participate!!! We will be out of school on
June 5th for the summer, but I am working summer school at different
building - its air conditioned. Over 93 degrees here today and
the kids are melting. We seem to skip spring!
Would you please send our new buddy to my home? That way I can
share it with our summer school programs.
Thank you so very much!

Thank you again for allowing us to participate in your wonderful
program. I hope your travels are going well. Being from a poverty
area our students don't have a lot of resources. In the past
we have collected pennies to adopt a whale. The children really
learned a lot about whales and took great pride in their efforts.
It just occurred to me that it would help them take ownership
and pride in this project if they could once again collect pennies
to help provide for transportation/creation costs, etc., of
our penguin.
Is there an address we should send it to?
Thank you again for providing such a unique and fascinating
project!

Dear Chris,
Sorry I haven't mailed you lately but I've been travelling round
New Zealand. I do, in fact, have a penguin for you at this very
moment. Currently I am in Oamaru visiting Dennis the penguin
and Dave Houston. It was really great to see my original creation
after nearly two years.
Anyway, I will send your penguin as soon as I get my butt in
gear. As to the collection of pennies I thought it might be
a nice idea for your class(es) to collect pennies for either
the blue penguin colony at Oamaru or the Yellow-Eyed Penguin
Trust in Dunedin - the choice is yours. I do know that both
organisations would be very grateful for any assistance in raising
funds, especially the Oamaru Blue Penguin colony who are currently
trying to raise 1.3 million for a new viewing platform etc.
I hope you haven't given up hope on a paper penguin because
you should have one winging it's way to you very soon! I hope
you are well and enjoying your summer break, I'm sure it's alot
warmer there than it is here.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Take care
Guy

Subject: Our Adorable Penguin
We love our penguin! Our Penguin has been very active - just
barely staying out of mischief. I didn't know if we should name
our gift or if I missed the description. In light of all of
the world events, we thought Patri Pax. Patri for Patriotic
and Pax for Peace. We really didn't know the sex of our penguin
so our girls thought it was a girl and of course the boys thought
our penguin was a male. We were trying to find an uni-sex name
to please everyone.
Patri is very patriotic and loves living in the US but being
a world traveler is very concerned that there is Peace on Earth
so all of Earth's innocents will be able to live in harmony
and be free from harm and fear.
Do I need to post something on the website? How do I do it?
Thank you so much!
On the 13 of Oct I'm giving a workshop for over 200 teachers
and our penguin is the guest of honor!
Thanks again!
Love,
Chris
